This analysis explores the mobile and cloud gaming segments and how they are both changing and expanding the overall market potential for the industry. As the market evolves these changes will also engender new challenges for both incumbents and new entrants alike—be it adapting to shifts in consumer behavior or maintaining adequate levels of innovation to retain and expand current user bases.
To date the impact of mobile and casual gaming on the core segment has remained more targeted than a wholesale change in gaming habits. In most cases the arrival of mobile gaming has done more to expand the gaming market than extract revenue potential from incumbents. Shorter replacement cycles in the mobile device space, however, are starting to adjust how these devices and platforms are viewed by the gaming industry and developers / publishers in particular. In time ABI Research expects to see increased blending of the core (referring to PC and console) and mobile gaming markets. This could arise from cross-platform deployments and / or technologies such as cloud gaming that makes game deployments more device agnostic.
